Nutmeg Cookies with Chocolate and Hazelnuts, perfect for Christmas

Embracing the Aromatic Charm of Nutmeg

Nutmeg holds a special place in the pantheon of holiday spices, and for good reason. Its distinctive, warm, and slightly sweet aroma is synonymous with coziness and festive cheer, making it an indispensable ingredient in seasonal baking. The moment you grate a fresh nutmeg, its intoxicating fragrance instantly transports you to a winter wonderland, evoking memories of joyful gatherings and cherished traditions. Paired with companions like cinnamon and allspice, nutmeg elevates any baked good from simple to sublime, infusing it with that quintessential “taste of Christmas.”

While ground nutmeg is readily available and works wonderfully, I wholeheartedly encourage you to seek out whole nutmeg for an unparalleled aromatic experience. The act of freshly grating it not only releases a more vibrant, potent flavor but also fills your kitchen with an incredible scent that commercially ground versions simply cannot replicate. Freshly grated nutmeg offers a complex profile – nutty, slightly peppery, and deeply aromatic – that truly shines in these cookies. Should whole nutmeg be elusive, rest assured that high-quality ground nutmeg will still deliver a delicious result, ensuring your cookies carry that signature festive warmth.

The Irresistible Combination: Chocolate and Hazelnuts

As if the comforting embrace of nutmeg wasn’t enough, these festive cookies take indulgence to the next level by being generously studded with rich chocolate chips and crunchy hazelnuts. This exquisite combination isn’t just an afterthought; it’s a carefully considered pairing that transforms a simple spice cookie into a luxurious holiday treat. The bittersweet notes of chocolate beautifully complement the warm, earthy spice of nutmeg, while the hazelnuts introduce a delightful textural contrast and a subtle, nutty richness that deepens the overall flavor profile. It’s a combination designed to create moments of pure bliss with every bite.

The holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and yes, a little bit of unapologetic indulgence. It’s when we set aside our everyday routines and allow ourselves to savor life’s sweet pleasures. These cookies embody that spirit perfectly. So go ahead, treat yourself and your loved ones to these decadent delights. Next week can be for salads and juices, but this week is for savoring every crumb of these perfect Christmas cookies.

Your Essential Guide to Perfect Holiday Baking

Baking during the holidays is more than just following a recipe; it’s about creating memories, sharing warmth, and filling your home with inviting scents. These Nutmeg Chocolate and Hazelnut Cookies are designed to be a centerpiece of that experience. For the best results, pay close attention to the details. Chilling the dough for at least 2-3 hours is a crucial step that prevents the cookies from spreading too much in the oven, ensuring they maintain their delightful chewiness and perfect shape. This waiting period also allows the flavors to meld beautifully, intensifying the nutmeg’s warmth and the richness of the chocolate and hazelnuts.

When baking, ensure your oven is preheated to the correct temperature (190 C or 375 F) to achieve that ideal balance of a crisp exterior and a wonderfully soft, moist interior. Properly lining your baking tray with parchment paper will prevent sticking and make for easy cleanup. Remember to leave adequate space between each cookie dough ball, as they will expand, creating those wonderfully rustic, golden-brown beauties. Baking for just 8-10 minutes is usually sufficient; you’re looking for lightly golden edges, as the cookies will continue to set as they cool on the rack.

Once baked, allow them to cool for a few minutes on the baking tray before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This helps them firm up without losing their tender texture. These cookies store beautifully in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, making them perfect for preparing ahead of time for unexpected guests or last-minute gifting. You can also freeze the baked cookies for up to three months, ensuring you always have a taste of Christmas on hand.

The Perfect Edible Gift for Festive Cheer

Beyond being a delightful treat for your own home, these Nutmeg Chocolate and Hazelnut Cookies make an exceptional homemade gift for friends, family, and fellow food enthusiasts. Much like my popular Vegan Florentine Biscuits or the festive Cranberry and Amaretto Biscotti, these cookies are crafted with love and packed with flavor, making them a thoughtful and much-appreciated present. Imagine beautifully packaged boxes or jars filled with these fragrant, delicious cookies – a truly personal touch that speaks volumes.

To make your cookie gifts even more special, consider tying them with festive ribbons, attaching a personalized tag, or placing them in charming decorative tins. Not only do they look appealing, but the recipient will also savor the exquisite taste of a homemade Christmas treat. Whether shared over a warm cup of coffee or given as a token of holiday affection, these cookies are sure to spread joy and deliciousness throughout the season. So, let’s cherish these moments, enjoy quality time with loved ones, and indulge in the simple pleasure of these festive cookies.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Ingredients

  • 120 g dairy-free butter
  • 300 g plain flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 150 g brown sugar
  • 60 ml almond milk or any other non-dairy milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 30 g chocolate chips non-dairy if vegan
  • 30 g hazelnuts roughly chopped

Instructions

  1. Gently melt the dairy-free butter in a small saucepan over low heat, then set it aside to cool completely.
  2. In a separate medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the plain flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a larger bowl, combine the brown sugar with the cooled melted butter. Add the almond milk, vanilla extract, and freshly grated nutmeg. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are smoothly incorporated and fragrant.
  4. Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, a bit at a time, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. Finally, fold in the chocolate chips and roughly chopped hazelnuts.
  5. Cover the dough and chill it in the refrigerator for a minimum of 2-3 hours. This step is crucial for flavor development and preventing excessive spreading during baking.
  6. Once the dough is chilled, preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Prepare a baking tray by lining it with baking parchment.
  7. Using your hands, form the dough into rough balls, each about the size of a golf ball. You should yield approximately 24 cookies. Place them on the prepared baking tray, ensuring you leave ample space between each cookie as they will expand during baking. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are just set.
  8. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking tray for a few minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve warm or at room temperature, and enjoy!

Notes

Feel free to customize these cookies by replacing hazelnuts with your favorite nuts, such as walnuts, pecans, or almonds. For an extra festive touch, you could also add a pinch of ground ginger or cinnamon to the dough.
