I stumbled upon a similar concept and was immediately captivated by how much joy and playful spookiness they promised. The idea of transforming simple ingredients into something so visually delightful and delicious for Halloween was irresistible. It’s always a thrill to find a concept that sparks creativity and then bring it to life in my own kitchen, adding little personal touches along the way to perfect the charm. These bats quickly became a family favorite, proving that some of the best holiday treats are often the simplest to prepare. They bring a smile to everyone’s face, whether it’s during a Halloween party, a school event, or just a fun afternoon activity at home.

Essential Ingredients for Your Spooky Bat Brigade
You will truly be amazed at how incredibly easy these little bats are to assemble. There’s no cooking, no baking, and absolutely no fussing around required. The minimal ingredient list makes this recipe not only simple but also cost-effective and accessible, even for last-minute Halloween party ideas. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in creating the iconic bat look and delicious taste that makes these treats so irresistible for Halloween.
Here’s what you’ll need to gather:
- Oreo Cookies: A classic choice for their distinct dark color, which forms the perfect “wings” for our bats. The original flavor works best for that stark contrast against the chocolate-dipped marshmallow, enhancing the bat-like appearance. While you can experiment with other dark-colored cookie varieties, Oreos offer the best texture and visual appeal. Make sure to get a full pack; you’ll need plenty of halves to create all those spooky wings!
- Marshmallows: These soft, squishy delights form the delightful body of our bats. Standard-sized marshmallows are ideal as they provide a good, manageable base for dipping and decorating. They’re large enough to hold a good amount of chocolate and easily accommodate the sugar eyes. Avoid oversized marshmallows as they can be difficult to handle, and tiny ones might get lost in the chocolate coating.
- Dark Chocolate: This will be melted down to create the rich, glossy coating for our marshmallows. Dark chocolate not only provides a beautiful, eerie contrast to the white marshmallow but also offers a slightly bitter note that perfectly balances the sweetness of the marshmallow and Oreo. High-quality dark chocolate chips or a chopped bar will melt smoothly and give the best, most appealing finish. You can also opt for semi-sweet chocolate, milk chocolate, or even white chocolate (perhaps colored black with food gel) for a different aesthetic, though dark chocolate truly embodies the classic bat theme.
- Sugar Eyes/Eyeballs: These are the magic touch that instantly brings your bats to life! Edible sugar eyeballs are widely available in baking aisles, especially during the Halloween season, and they instantly add personality and a fun, spooky vibe to your treats. They come in various sizes, so pick ones that will look proportionate on your marshmallows.
Optional Decorations to Elevate Your Bats: If you want to add an extra layer of spookiness or personality, consider these creative additions:
- Black Gel Food Colouring: A small tube of black gel food colouring can be used with a toothpick or a fine-tipped food decorator pen to draw tiny fangs, mischievous smiles, or other intricate details onto your chocolate bats once the chocolate has slightly set. This allows for even more customization and character.
- Miniature Witches Hats: These adorable sugar decorations, often found in baking supply stores during autumn, can be placed on top of the bats for an extra festive and charming touch. Just ensure the chocolate is still slightly tacky but not fully wet when you apply them, so they stick securely without sliding off.
- Sprinkles: Orange, purple, black, or even shimmering edible glitter sprinkles can add extra texture, sparkle, and color to your bats. Apply them immediately after dipping the marshmallow in chocolate, before it sets, for best adherence.
- Lollipop Sticks or Bamboo Skewers: While not an ingredient, these are essential tools for holding the marshmallows for dipping and for creating a fun “pop” presentation. Lollipop sticks are generally smoother and safer for younger children to handle, as bamboo skewers can have sharp points. Consider using colorful sticks to match the Halloween theme!

Crafting Your Chocolate Marshmallow Bats: Step-by-Step Guide
This recipe is not only simple but also incredibly forgiving, making it the perfect activity to share with children. Little hands can help with many of the steps, from arranging the cookie wings to placing the sugar eyes, fostering a sense of accomplishment and fun. Remember, the goal is to have fun, so don’t worry about achieving absolute perfection on your first try!
Preparation is Key: Setting Up Your Bat-Making Station
Before you begin assembling your bats, ensure your workspace is thoroughly prepared. Line a large baking sheet or tray with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. This non-stick surface is absolutely crucial to prevent your chocolate-dipped marshmallows from sticking as they set, making for easy removal later. Having everything prepped and within easy reach makes the entire process smoother, more efficient, and much more enjoyable, especially when working with enthusiastic little helpers who are eager to get to the fun parts!
Creating the Iconic Oreo Wings: The Foundation of Your Bats
The first step in bringing your bats to life is preparing their distinctive wings. Gently twist each Oreo cookie to separate the two wafers. You might find some cream filling sticks to both sides; simply scrape (or enjoy!) the cream filling from the wafers using a small, dull knife or the back of a spoon. Once separated and cleaned of cream, take each wafer half and carefully cut it in half again. For this, you’ll want a sharp knife, but remember to be gentle and use a sawing motion rather than pressing down hard, as Oreo wafers can be delicate and prone to crumbling. These quarter-circle pieces will form the bat wings. Arrange two of these cut Oreo halves side-by-side on your prepared baking tray for each bat, ensuring they are slightly separated, like outstretched wings. Repeat this process for all your cookies, creating a whole army of future bat wings ready for their bodies.

Dipping the Marshmallow Bodies: Coating in Dark Chocolate
Now for the main event: giving our marshmallows their dark, bat-like coating. Carefully poke a bamboo skewer or lollipop stick almost all the way through the center of each marshmallow. This provides a stable handle for dipping. Next, immerse the marshmallow completely into your mug of melted dark chocolate. Rotate it gently to ensure it’s fully coated with an even layer of chocolate. Lift the marshmallow out and gently tap the skewer against the edge of the mug to allow any excess chocolate to drip off. This step is crucial for achieving a smooth, even coating without thick, clumpy chocolate, ensuring a neat and professional finish for your bats.

Assembling Your Bats and Adding Personality with Eyes
Once dipped, carefully place the chocolate-coated marshmallow directly onto the center of the pre-arranged Oreo cookie wings on your baking tray. The warmth and tackiness of the chocolate will help adhere the wings securely to the marshmallow body. Immediately, while the chocolate is still wet and pliable, carefully add two sugar eyes to the front of the marshmallow, pressing them gently to secure them in place. The unset chocolate will act as a natural “glue,” ensuring the eyes stick perfectly.
Continue this process until all your marshmallows and chocolate are used up, or until you’ve made enough bats for your Halloween gathering. Once all your bats are assembled and adorned with eyes, transfer the entire baking tray into the refrigerator for approximately 20 minutes. This chilling time allows the chocolate to set firmly, ensuring your bats hold their shape and their decorations securely for a long-lasting, delightful treat.
Adding Optional Details and Further Decorations: If you’re using other sugar decorations, like mini witches’ hats, edible fangs, or sprinkles, a slightly different approach is best to ensure they adhere properly. After the first 10 minutes in the fridge, take the tray out. At this point, the chocolate will be partially set but still tacky enough for additional decorations to adhere without sliding off. Carefully place your desired decorations, pressing lightly. Then, return the tray to the fridge for the remaining 10 minutes to allow everything to finish setting completely. This two-stage chilling ensures all decorations stay perfectly in place, creating truly professional-looking and spooktacular treats!

Mastering the Melt: Tips for Perfect Chocolate Dipping
Achieving a smooth, glossy chocolate coating is absolutely key to the visual appeal and deliciousness of these marshmallow bats. There are two primary, reliable methods for melting chocolate, each with its own advantages. The crucial element, regardless of your chosen technique, is to melt the chocolate slowly and carefully to prevent it from seizing or burning, which can result in a grainy, unusable mess. Avoid any contact with water, as even a tiny drop can cause chocolate to seize and become clumpy.
Microwave Method: Quick and Convenient
If time is of the essence and you need a speedy solution, the microwave can be your best friend for melting chocolate. Start by placing your chopped dark chocolate (or chocolate chips) in a microwave-safe bowl. It’s important to chop larger bars into smaller, uniform pieces for more even melting. Microwave the chocolate in short bursts, typically 20-second intervals at medium power (around 50-70%). After each interval, remove the bowl and give the chocolate a gentle stir with a clean, dry spatula, even if it doesn’t look fully melted. The residual heat in the bowl and the chocolate pieces will continue to melt the chocolate as you stir. Continue this process, stirring after each burst, until the chocolate is completely smooth and free of lumps. Avoid the temptation to microwave for longer periods or at full power, as this is the quickest way to burn chocolate, making it unusable.
Double Boiler Method: Gentle and Controlled
For a more controlled and traditional approach, melting chocolate over simmering water (often called a double boiler or bain-marie method) is an excellent choice, especially if you’re working with larger quantities or want to maintain a consistent temperature. To set this up, you’ll need a heat-proof bowl (preferably glass or metal) that fits snugly over a saucepan without its bottom touching the water. Fill the saucepan with about an inch or two of water and bring it to a gentle simmer over low to medium heat. Once simmering, place the bowl with your chopped chocolate on top. The steam from the simmering water will gently and evenly melt the chocolate. Crucially, ensure the bottom of your bowl does not come into direct contact with the hot water, as direct heat can easily cause the chocolate to burn. Stir the chocolate gently with a clean, dry spatula as it begins to melt. Continue stirring until it’s completely smooth, silky, and free of any lumps. This method is slower but offers precise control, significantly reducing the risk of burning or seizing the chocolate, resulting in a perfectly melted consistency.
The Mug Advantage for Effortless Dipping
Whichever method you choose for melting your chocolate, a helpful tip for an easier and cleaner dipping process is to transfer the melted chocolate into a tall, narrow mug once it’s smooth and ready. The depth and shape of a mug make it significantly easier to fully immerse the marshmallows without having to tilt a wide, shallow bowl excessively. This ensures a complete and even coating of chocolate on each marshmallow, minimizing mess and preventing excessive chocolate waste. This simple trick will make your dipping process much more efficient and enjoyable, allowing you to create perfect chocolate marshmallow bats every single time.

Storing Your Spooky Sweet Treats
One of the many advantages of these chocolate marshmallow bats is that they can be prepared well in advance, taking some pressure off your Halloween party preparations. Once the chocolate has fully set and hardened in the refrigerator, you can store them safely until you’re ready to showcase them. To keep them fresh and prevent them from sticking together or losing their adorable shape, arrange them in an airtight container. It’s best to store them in a single layer if possible, or use parchment paper to separate multiple layers. They will maintain their deliciousness and charming appearance for up to 5 days when stored properly in the fridge. This makes them an ideal make-ahead treat for parties, school events, or just for enjoying throughout the Halloween week.
Serving and Presentation Ideas
These versatile bats are not just for eating; they also make fantastic, edible decorations! Get creative with how you display them. Stand them upright in a decorative Halloween-themed cup or jar for an intriguing centerpiece, or arrange them artfully on a tiered cake stand for an impressive dessert display. They can even be used as fun and festive toppers for cupcakes, a larger Halloween cake, or individual dessert cups. Their charming and slightly spooky appearance adds instant festivity and a touch of homemade warmth to any Halloween spread, making them perfect for trick-or-treaters and party guests alike.

Please note that all my recipes are developed and tested in metric grams. I recommend that you use digital scales for a more accurate result. I have provided a conversion to US customary in the recipe but please note that I haven’t tested using this method.
Notes
- If using bamboo skewers, please be careful as they have sharp edges. You may want to swap them for lollipop sticks to make them safer for kids.
- You can add extra details to your chocolate bats, like fangs, using some black gel food colouring. You can also add more edible sugar decorations, like little witches hats. If doing so, please allow the chocolate to set for about 10-15 minutes before adding the hats. Otherwise they may not stick and slide off the marshmallows.
