The blood orange season, with its fleeting beauty and unique flavor, is a true culinary treasure. In the UK, it feels like it vanishes all too quickly, leaving us longing for its distinct crimson hue and complex taste. These fruits are simply too stunning, too flavorful, not to be celebrated and featured prominently in our cooking. I honestly can’t believe I haven’t shared a blood orange recipe before, but I’m making up for lost time with this sweet, tangy, and wonderfully simple vegan blood orange curd today. It’s the perfect way to capture the essence of this magnificent fruit and enjoy it long after its season has passed.

Discovering the Delight of Homemade Curd, Vegan Style

Confession time: I’m relatively new to the world of curds. However, I’ve been hearing so many rave reviews and seeing them pop up everywhere, that my curiosity finally got the better of me. And oh, am I glad it did! From the very first spoonful, I was completely hooked. The smooth texture, the vibrant flavor – it’s a revelation! And creating a vegan version means everyone can enjoy this luscious spread, regardless of dietary preferences.

Making a vegan curd involves a clever substitution of traditional ingredients like eggs and butter with plant-based alternatives such as cornflour (or arrowroot/cornstarch) for thickening and dairy-free milk. The result is a surprisingly rich and creamy consistency that holds its own against conventional curds, bursting with fresh blood orange flavor. It’s truly a testament to how incredible vegan baking and cooking can be, proving that you don’t need animal products to achieve extraordinary taste and texture.

Unleash the Versatility: Endless Uses for Your Vegan Blood Orange Curd

Once you’ve experienced the pure joy of making this vegan blood orange curd, you’ll find the possibilities for its use are truly endless. The first item on my agenda was creating this exquisite white chocolate cake, where the curd added a bright, tangy counterpoint to the sweetness. But why stop there?

  • Breakfast Booster: Swirl a dollop into your morning porridge or oatmeal for an instant upgrade. Spread it generously over fluffy vegan pancakes or waffles, creating a breakfast experience that feels truly indulgent.
  • Dessert Dynamo: Use it as a luscious filling for pies and tarts, adding a sophisticated citrus note. It’s also fantastic as a layer in trifles or parfaits, beautifully complementing fresh berries and vegan cream.
  • Baked Goods Brilliance: Transform your cookies and biscuits by using this curd as a vibrant, fruity filling. Imagine shortbread cookies sandwiched with this ruby-red delight, or thumbprint cookies with a dollop baked right in.
  • Simple Spreads: While I haven’t tried it myself yet, many swear by its deliciousness spread simply on toast or warm scones. It’s a quick and easy way to enjoy its rich flavor with minimal fuss.
  • Yogurt & Smoothie Enhancement: Mix a spoonful into plain vegan yogurt for a flavored treat, or blend it into your morning smoothie for an extra zing and nutritional boost.
  • Cake & Cupcake Filling: Beyond the white chocolate cake, this curd makes an excellent filling for almost any cake or cupcake. It adds moisture, flavor, and a beautiful visual element.

The vibrant color and distinctive flavor of blood oranges truly shine in this curd, making it a showstopper in any application. It’s a fantastic way to brighten up winter dishes and bring a touch of sunshine to your table, even when it’s grey and snowy outside. I encourage you to experiment and find your favorite ways to incorporate this delightful spread into your culinary repertoire.

Notes

  • The curd will set more as it cools. You can place it in the fridge to cool it down quicker.
  • If you prefer the curd to be sweeter, just adjust the amount of agave nectar to your taste.
  • You can store it in the fridge for up to 5 days in an airtight container.
